Alba Carolina Fortress

Alba Iulia, Alba County

Alba Carolina Citadel occupies the historical center of the city of Alba Iulia and is one of the largest bastion fortifications in Romania. It was built in the eighteenth century, under the Habsburg administration, over the remains of the Roman fort Apulum and the medieval fortress. The plan has the shape of a seven-pointed star, with bastions, ditches and several rows of walls.

The most famous landmarks are the monumental gates, decorated with statues and reliefs. You can walk from one gate to another and along the ditches, where you can best see how big the citadel is.
