This page explains what data is collected when you use topfaves.net, why, how long it is kept and what your rights are, wherever you live. topfaves.net is the English version of Topi.ro, and the two sites share the same database for lists and votes.

Who is responsible for your data

The site is run by the topfaves.net team, based in Romania. For any question or request about your data, write to the address on our Contact page.

What data is collected

  • When you vote. Voting needs no account, name or email. So that a vote is not counted twice, the site remembers what you voted during your current visit, using a session cookie.
  • When you send a suggestion or a comment. We keep the text you wrote. For suggestions we also keep a fingerprint of your IP address from which the address cannot be recovered; we use it only to stop automated messages. Please do not write names, phone numbers or addresses in these forms.
  • When you email us. We keep your message and your address so we can reply.
  • Technical data. Like any website, the server briefly logs your IP address, browser, the page requested and the time, for security and to fix errors.
  • Statistics. We use Google Analytics to see how many people visit the site and which lists they read. The statistics are aggregated, not about individuals, and Google Analytics does not store IP addresses.
  • Ads. The site may show ads through Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to choose ads and measure their results, including ads personalized based on your visits to this and other sites. In the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, advertising cookies are used only if you agree in the message Google shows on the site.
  • Trailers. Movie and TV show clips come from YouTube. When you play a clip, YouTube (Google) may set cookies and learn which page you visited.
  • Links to shops. Some links to shops are affiliate links: if you reach a shop through them, the shop knows you came from us and we may earn a commission. The price stays the same for you.
  • Facebook and Pinterest. The icons in the header are plain links and load nothing from these networks until you click them.

Why we use the data

  • for fair voting, security and stopping automated messages: our legitimate interest in running a safe site;
  • for statistics and ads: your consent where the law requires it, and otherwise our legitimate interest in keeping the site free;
  • for emails: to reply to you.

Who receives the data

The company that hosts the site's servers and Google (Analytics, AdSense, YouTube). We do not sell personal data and we do not give it to anyone else, except where the law requires it.

Data sent outside Europe

Google may process data in the United States and in other countries. For these transfers Google uses the safeguards required by law: the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and the standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission.

How long we keep data

  • the session cookie: until you close the browser;
  • suggestions and comments: as long as they are used on the site, or until you ask us to delete them;
  • server technical data: a short period, for security;
  • Google Analytics statistics: up to 14 months;
  • emails: as long as needed to reply to you.

Your rights

If you are in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you can ask to see your data, have it corrected or deleted, limit how it is used, or receive it in a format you can take elsewhere. You can object to its use and withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what was done before. You can complain to a data protection authority: in Romania, ANSPDCP; in the United Kingdom, the ICO; otherwise, the authority in your country.

If you live in California or another U.S. state with a privacy law, you have the right to know what data is collected, to ask for it to be deleted or corrected, and to opt out of its sale or its use for personalized ads. We do not sell personal data. You can opt out of personalized ads from the privacy options shown on the site or in Google Ads Settings. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

Wherever you are, you can write to us with the same requests. Most data on the site does not say who you are (votes are anonymous), so sometimes we cannot link it to you; if so, we will tell you.

Children

The site is not meant for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data about them. If you learn that a child has sent us personal data, write to us and we will delete it.

Keeping data safe

The site uses an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and access to the server and the database is restricted.
