Ardud Fortress
Ardud, Satu Mare
The Ardud Citadel, in Satu Mare county, preserves the traces of the stone fortification built by the Drágfi family in the fifteenth century. On its foundations, the Károlyi family later built a castle, the construction stages of which can be read in the remaining towers and walls.
The neo-Gothic tower, restored at the end of the nineteenth century, dominates the complex. Portions of the walls, rooms and vaulted spaces can be seen in the premises. The history of the fortress is also linked to the poet Sándor Petőfi, who married Júlia Szendrey here in 1847, in the chapel of the former castle.
