Argamum (Orgame) Fortress

Capul Doloșman, Tulcea

At Cape Doloșman, near the town of Jurilovca in Tulcea county, the Argamum fortress occupies a limestone promontory near Lake Razim. The settlement bore the Greek name Orgame and, in the Roman period, Argamum. Archaeological research documents habitation from Greek times and the city's later development, when fortifications and Christian basilicas were erected.

Fragments of walls and building foundations can be seen on the ground, with the expanse of the lake in the background. The defensive wall from the sixth century and the vestiges of the basilicas are landmarks for understanding the last period of the fortress' existence. Discoveries include pottery, oil lamps and traces of pottery workshops, objects that speak of the daily activities of the inhabitants. The site can be visited outdoors, in an open landscape. The investigated walls and surfaces must be viewed from the access routes, without climbing the remains.
