Armenian Catholic Cathedral in Gherla

Gherla, Cluj

The Armenian-Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in the center of Gherla was completed in 1804 by the community of Armenians who founded the city. It is one of the last two remaining Armenian-Catholic churches of the nine that existed in Gherla.

Inside is the painting "The Descent from the Cross", attributed to Peter Paul Rubens. According to tradition, the Armenians chose it from the imperial galleries in Vienna, at the invitation of Emperor Francis I.
