Arnota Monastery
Bistrița, Vâlcea
Arnota Monastery stands above the village of Bistrița, Costești commune, Vâlcea County, on a slope of the mountain with the same name. It was founded in the seventeenth century by Matei Basarab and his wife, Elina, and the church is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
The interior preserves its paintings, alongside the tombs of Matei Basarab and his father, Danciu. The small church, enclosed by the buildings with the monks’ cells, has a porch added later and stone decorations. From its high position there are views of the Bistrița valley and the hills of the Horezu-Costești area.
