Arutela Roman Fort
Arutela Roman Fort lies in Poiana Bivolari, on the left bank of the Olt river, in the Păușa-Călimănești area. It was built in 137–138, under Emperor Hadrian, to guard the road through the Olt Gorge. Syrian archers in the service of the Roman army were also stationed here. The fort remained in use until the first half of the third century.
The site preserves the remains of walls and military buildings, and to the east of the gate the Roman road paved with stone blocks was discovered. The gate has undergone modern reconstructions and new work as part of the 2026 rehabilitation project. The photo shows it before this work; check access conditions before visiting.
