Ascension of the Lord Cathedral in Bacău
The Ascension Cathedral stands in the center of Bacău, at the end of the axes formed by Nicolae Bălcescu and Mihai Viteazu streets. The construction, started in the 1990s, uses elements of Byzantine and Moldavian architecture. The large volume, central dome and towers on the western facade make it easily recognizable from the square in front of it.
The building is approximately 67 meters long and 37 meters wide. The liturgical activity is documented in the semi-basement chapel: the patronal feast service was also celebrated here in May 2026. For the visitor, the monumental exterior and the chapel are distinct landmarks of the ensemble. The presence of services in the semi-basement does not mean that all the spaces of the great church are arranged and accessible for visiting.
