Avram Iancu Lake in Ocna Sibiului

Ocna Sibiului, Sibiu

Lake Avram Iancu, also called Ocna Pustie, was formed on the site of the largest salt mine in Ocna Sibiului, known in German as "Grosse Grube". It is approximately 130 meters deep and is the deepest anthroposaline lake in Romania, i.e. a salt lake formed in a former mine.

Like the other salt lakes in the resort, it has a layer of less salty water on the surface, and very salty water deep down, which keeps the heat. The steep banks show the edge of the old mine.
