Baal Shem Tov Wooden Synagogue
The Baal Shem Tov Wooden Synagogue in Piatra Neamț stands on Dimitrie Ernici Street, near the historic center. The present building dates from 1766 and was built on the site of an older synagogue, under a charter from Prince Grigore III Ghica. It bears witness to the history of the city’s Jewish community.
The interior preserves carved wooden liturgical furniture. The eastern wall is dominated by the cabinet for the Torah scrolls, called the “Holy Urn” in local descriptions and made in 1835 by Șaraga Ițchok ben Moische. It is arranged on three levels, with columns and metal decorations. The name of the synagogue recalls the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism. Group visits must be booked in advance.
