Babele in the Bucegi Mountains
Bucegi Plateau, Dâmbovița
Babele stand on the plateau of the Bucegi Mountains, in Moroeni commune, Dâmbovița County, near the mountain hut of the same name. The rocks have the appearance of giant mushrooms, with the top wider than the base. The shapes formed through the uneven erosion of the rock layers.
Wind, water, freezing and thawing gradually shaped the conglomerates and sandstones on the plateau. The more resistant blocks remained above the portions that eroded faster. Alpine meadows stretch all around, with views of the high peaks of the Bucegi. The formations lie within Bucegi Natural Park, in a mountain setting where the weather can change quickly.
