Balaciu Monastery

Balaciu Monastery, also known as Piteșteanu Monastery, is in Balaciu commune, Ialomița County, near the banks of the Ialomița River. The church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God remained on the old village site after flooding forced the residents to relocate. A monastic community grew up around it in the interwar period.

After being dissolved in 1961, the monastery was re-established in 1991. The large church, the bell tower, the cells and the wooden chapel make up the current ensemble. Inside, the murals covering the walls and the iconostasis stand out, and the monastery courtyard looks out over the Bărăgan Plain.
