Bánffy Castle in Sâncrai

Sâncrai, Alba

Bánffy Castle is located in Sâncrai, a locality belonging to the municipality of Aiud, near the Mureș River. The building owes its current form to the alterations commissioned by Jenő Bánffy at the end of the nineteenth century. Architect Lajos Pákey and builder Carl Frigyes Maetz joined and remodeled the existing buildings between 1890 and 1896, combining volumes and decorations from several styles.

The facades have towers with different roofs, gables and a terrace facing the river. After it ceased to be a noble residence, the castle housed schools and social welfare institutions. Now restored, it serves as a cultural center. Public access is linked to the events organized here; themed tours can be arranged through the Alba County Council.
