Bănița Gorge

Bănița, Hunedoara

The Bănița Gorge is located in Bănița commune, Hunedoara County, close to the road that connects Hațeg with Petroșani. The Bănița stream has cut a narrow corridor in the limestone, with curved walls and sections that overhang the water. Light filters through gaps in the rock and highlights the surfaces smoothed by the current.

The streambed holds stones and small steps, and the vegetation along the edges frames the entrance to the gorge. The rounded shapes of the walls are the result of water erosion on the rock. Near the entrance, the openings called "La nări" preserve traces of secondary watercourses.
