Bârsana Monastery

Bârsana, Maramureș

The Bârsana monastery is located in the Iza Valley, in the Bârsana commune of Maramureș county. The current ensemble began to be built in 1993, on an historic monastic site, according to the project of the architect Dorel Cordoș. The buildings use wood and river stone, according to the tradition of Maramureș craftsmen.

In the premises you can see the church with a high tower, the summer altar, the bell tower and the wooden houses, connected by alleys and gardens. The Gavril de Bârsana Museum houses icons and old books. The community of nuns keeps a daily schedule of services, published on the monastery's website.
