Beliș-Fântânele Lake

Apuseni Mountains, Cluj

Lake Beliș-Fântânele lies in Cluj County, in the area of Beliș and Râșca communes, between the peaks of the Gilău, Vlădeasa and Muntele Mare mountains. The reservoir on the Someșul Cald River is part of the region's hydropower system and supplies the Mărișel power plant. The coves, wooded shores and surrounding roads offer different views across the lake.

Creating the lake in the 1970s led to the relocation of several settlements in the valley. When the water level drops low enough, the ruins of the church of the former village of Giurcuța de Jos may emerge; their visibility depends on the reservoir level. The Beliș-Fântânele resort is located on the shore and is a starting point for walks in the surroundings. Visitors can enjoy the views from public roads and designated viewpoints, observing the restrictions near the dam and the hydropower facilities.
