Bethlen Castle in Sânmiclăuș

Sânmiclăuș, Alba

Bethlen Castle is located in the village of Sânmiclăuș, Șona commune, Alba county. The residence was built between 1668 and 1683 by Miklós Bethlen, who drew up the plans himself after years of study in Western Europe. The building is part of an ensemble with a park and a granary.

The facades and loggias retain elements of the Transylvanian Renaissance. The loggia runs over two levels, with arches resting on decorated pillars. The stone door and window frames and the coat of arms of the Brukenthal family can still be seen on the facades. In 1856, the estate passed to this family, who turned it into an agricultural school.
