Bistrița Monastery in Neamț
Bistrița Monastery is in the village of Bistrița, Alexandru cel Bun commune, Neamț County. The monastery goes back to a foundation of Alexandru cel Bun in the early fifteenth century. The current church was rebuilt in 1554 by Alexandru Lăpușneanu and preserves the tombs of the founding voivode and Lady Ana.
The enclosure walls, the gate tower and the bell tower with chapel form a complex built up with contributions from several rulers. Important documents for the history of Moldavia were written and kept at the monastery. The museum and the buildings in the courtyard complement the church, with its decoration of niches and stone-framed windows.
