Black Church

Brașov, Brașov

In the center of Brașov, in the Johannes Honterus Courtyard, the Black Church is recognizable by its tall walls, buttresses and clock tower. Construction of the Gothic church began at the end of the fourteenth century. The fire of 1689 severely damaged the church, and its rebuilding added elements from different eras to the interior.

Inside you can see the bronze baptismal font from 1472, the guild pews, the pulpit and Ottoman carpets donated by merchants and craftsmen. The grand organ, built by Carl August Buchholz and completed in 1839, is used for concerts and services. Carved portals and medieval murals round out the Evangelical church's heritage.
