Butchers' Bastion in Baia Mare

Baia Mare, Maramureș

The Butchers' Bastion stands in Piața Izvoare in Baia Mare and preserves part of the city's old defensive system. The round tower, stonework and conical roof set it apart from the surrounding houses and commercial premises. Seen from the courtyard or from the square, the monument clearly shows the role the fortifications played in the medieval town.

Restored and reopened to visitors in 2011, the bastion is managed by the Maramureș County Museum of History and Archaeology. The courtyard and spaces used for cultural activities complete the monument. It is separate from the museum's main building in the former Mint, with its own address and entrance. Before visiting the bastion, check the information for this site, because the visiting conditions differ from those of the main museum.
