Căldărușani Monastery
Lipia, Ilfov
On the shore of Lake Căldărușani, in Gruiu commune, Ilfov County, stands the monastery founded by Matei Basarab in 1638. The large church, dedicated to Saint Demetrius, has three towers and is surrounded by the buildings of the enclosure. The lake surrounds the grounds of the complex on several sides.
The monastery had a school for copyists, a printing house and a painting school. Nicolae Grigorescu worked here in his youth. The picture gallery preserves a collection of ecclesiastical art, and the old princely throne room holds items from the monastery’s treasury. There are also other churches and chapels within the enclosure.
