California Condor
Gymnogyps californianus
A wingspan of 3 metres makes the California condor the largest land bird in North America; it can weigh up to 14 kg. Its feathers are black, with white patches under the wings, and its head is almost bald, with skin ranging from grey in young birds to yellow and bright orange in adults. In 1987 it became extinct in the wild, when the last free condors were captured, and it was later released back into nature; the IUCN lists it as critically endangered.
