Câlnic Fortress

Câlnic, Alba

The village of Câlnic in Alba county preserves the medieval fortress of its Saxon community. The fortification began as a noble residence in the second half of the thirteenth century and was later adapted by the Saxon community. The ensemble has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, together with other Transylvanian villages with fortified churches.

In the courtyard of the fortress you can see the keep, the chapel and the defensive walls. The entrance is protected by a tower and a fortified corridor. The fortress is located in a low area of the village, close to the stream.
