Calvary of Aiud Memorial

Aiud, Alba

The Calvarul Aiudului memorial stands in the Râpa Robilor area, in the southwest of the city, on the site associated with the burial of dead prisoners in the Aiud penitentiary. The monument commemorates the victims of communist repression. The project belongs to the architect Anghel Marcu, who worked together with Nicolae Goga and Liliana Chiaburu, and the construction was completed in 1999.

The composition is dominated by a large, inclined cross, supported by fourteen crosses arranged in two rows. The ensemble expresses the suffering of the imprisoned and the solidarity between them. Inside the monument there is a chapel, where marble slabs preserve the names of people who passed through communist prisons. The steps and the location on the hill accentuate the silhouette of the crosses, visible from the base of the memorial.
