Caraș Gorge
Caraș Gorge is located in the Anina Mountains, in Caraș-Severin county, with access via trails from the town of Carașova. The Caraș River carved a narrow valley in the limestone, with vertical walls, ridges and caves. The gorges are protected within the Semenic–Cheile Carașului National Park and are approximately 19 kilometers long.
The path from Carașova follows the river to Poiana Prolaz, a meadow surrounded by rocky slopes. Above the gorge are plateaus with trenches dug into the limestone, round depressions and entrances to underground hollows. Forests of beech and the oak known locally as gorun alternate with thickets of lilac and cărpiniță. Karst springs bring to the surface the water that has circulated through the cracks in the rocks.
