Cârța Abbey
Cârța Abbey, from Cârța village, Sibiu county, preserves the ruins of a Cistercian monastery founded at the beginning of the thirteenth century. The monks from Igriș built here a complex that contributed to the spread of Gothic architecture in Transylvania, at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains.
The western facade, the windows with circular openings, the arches and the walls of the roofless nave outline the old church. The eastern side is used by the evangelical community, and a memorial cemetery is located in the former nave. The monastery was abolished in 1474, by the decision of King Matthias Corvinus, its goods being transferred to the church in Sibiu.
