Cernica Monastery
Pantelimon, Ilfov
Cernica Monastery is in the town of Pantelimon, Ilfov County, near Cernica commune. It was founded by the high court official Cernica Știrbei and his wife Chiajna and is first recorded in 1608. The monastery’s churches and buildings stand on islands in the lake, connected to the shore by roads and bridges.
The complex includes the churches of Saint Nicholas and Saint George, monks’ cells, chapels and a cemetery with the graves of notable Romanians. The poet Tudor Arghezi also lived here at the beginning of the twentieth century. The lake and vegetation separate the monastery from the built-up areas nearby.
