Church in Strei
Strei, Hunedoara
In Strei, part of the town of Călan in Hunedoara County, stands the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The small medieval church is built of rough stone and has a bell tower at the west entrance. Its architecture combines Byzantine and Gothic influences, adapted to a village church in Țara Hațegului.
Inside are murals attributed to the painter Grozie, including the “Christ in Glory” scene and depictions of the apostles. The altar has a stone vault, while the nave is covered by a vault of wooden boards. Roman tombstones were reused at the base of the tower.
