Church on the Hill – Holy Archangels

Călimănești, Vâlcea

The Church on the Hill, dedicated to the Holy Archangels, stands on Tudor Vladimirescu Street in Călimănești. It was built between 1711 and 1715 under the patronage of Seraphim, abbot of Cozia Monastery. From the courtyard, the eye is drawn to the open porch and the paintings on the facades, along with the wide roof and the compact proportions of the building.

The ensemble is on the List of Historical Monuments and comprises the church and the bell tower. The portrait of the founder is preserved in the narthex, and the murals have been reworked in several periods. The church continues to serve the parish, so the interior can be seen when the church is open, without interrupting services.
