Ciolanu Monastery
Haleș, Buzău
Ciolanu Monastery is in Tisău commune, Buzău County, on a wooded slope near the Nișcov valley. The precinct contains the old church of Saint George and the large church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. The earliest known document mentioning the monastery dates from 1600.
The large church was built in the nineteenth century with the support of Bishop Chesarie of Buzău. Its murals are associated with Nicolae Teodorescu, and the icons commissioned for the church include works by Gheorghe Tattarescu. Around it are cells and monastic buildings, and in the nearby clearings lies the Măgura Sculpture Camp.
