Cocoș Monastery

Niculițel, Tulcea

Cocoș Monastery is located in Niculițel commune, Tulcea county, at the foot of a wooded hill. The monastery was founded in 1833 by Archimandrite Visarion and his disciples, at a time when Dobrogea was under Ottoman administration.

Today's large church was built at the beginning of the twentieth century, according to the plans of the architect Toma Dobrescu. The courtyard includes the belfry and blocks of monastic cells with galleries and balconies. In the church are kept the relics of the four martyrs discovered in the crypt of the basilica of Niculițel, brought to the monastery in 1973: Zoticos, Attalos, Kamasis and Filippos.
