Comana Monastery

Comana, Giurgiu

Comana Monastery is in Comana commune, Giurgiu County, near the Neajlov wetland. The original foundation is associated with Vlad Țepeș and the year 1461. The complex was later rebuilt by Radu Șerban’s family and descendants, keeping its enclosure with walls and towers.

The courtyard holds the Church of Saint Nicholas, monks’ cells and areas that still show traces of the residence and fortifications. The gazebo and monastic buildings reflect rebuilding from different periods. Nearby is a mausoleum for the soldiers who fell in the First World War. Its position next to the marshes helped the old fortified monastery defend itself.
