Coopers' Tower and the walls of Bistrița Fortress

Bistrița, Bistrița-Năsăud

The Coopers’ Tower and the fragments of the medieval walls are located in the southern part of the historical center of Bistrița, Bistrița-Năsăud county. The city's fortress was built in the fifteenth century, after a privilege granted by Matthias Corvinus. It had gates defended by towers, moats and drawbridges. From the old fortification, the Coopers’ Tower remained the main preserved vertical landmark.

Its maintenance and defense belonged to the guild of coopers and woodworkers. The tower also served as a place for guild meetings. The nearby walls allow you to trace part of the outline of the fortress, and the route can continue towards the remains of the former Dominican convent. The spaces in the tower were set up for exhibitions; access to the interior is checked at the tourist information center.
