Corbii de Piatră Monastery

Jgheaburi, Argeș

Corbii de Piatră Monastery is in the village of Jgheaburi, Corbi commune, Argeș County, in the Doamnei River valley. The church is carved into a sandstone cliff, and next to it is a rock-cut room used as a refectory. The monastery is attested in documents from 1512, during the reign of Neagoe Basarab.

Medieval murals survive inside the church. The tall rock face shelters the rooms and forms an overhang above the entrance. Initially, the church had two altars in the same space. The frescoes preserve elements of Byzantine painting, and Magdalina's name appears in the documents of its refoundation in 1512.
