Coronation Cathedral in Alba Iulia
In Alba Iulia, the Coronation Cathedral was built between 1921 and 1922, to a design by the architect Victor Gheorghe Ștefănescu. The complex is linked to the ceremony of October 15, 1922, when Ferdinand and Maria were crowned sovereigns of Greater Romania. The ceremony took place under a canopy set up in front of the bell tower. The church stands in the middle of a courtyard surrounded by galleries with arcades and pavilions.
The open porch, the twisted rope moulding on the facade and the details inspired by Brâncovenesc architecture can be seen from the courtyard. Inside, Costin Petrescu's murals include religious scenes and portraits of the founders. Michael the Brave, Lady Stanca, King Ferdinand and Queen Maria are also represented. The carved oak iconostasis and the columns clad in Moneasa marble complete the church's decoration.
