Coșula Monastery

Coșula, Botoșani

In the Miletin Valley, in the village of Coșula, Botoșani County, stands the monastery built in 1535 by the grand treasurer Mateiaș, advisor to Petru Rareș. The Church of Saint Nicholas preserves its founding inscription and sixteenth-century frescoes. On the facades you can see rows of niches and small recesses, and a tower rises above the nave.

The grounds include the abbot's house, the bell tower and the farm buildings of the old monastery. The abbot's house has a porch and cellars, and the surrounding wall follows the slope of the hill. The original frescoes were partly covered by later paintings and were uncovered and restored during conservation work.
