Council Tower in Sibiu

Sibiu, Sibiu

The Council Tower in Sibiu is located between Piața Mare and Piața Mică, marking an old gate of the fortified town. It was built in the thirteenth century and rebuilt several times over the centuries, which gave it its present form.

The ground floor keeps the vaulted passage between the two squares, and above it rise the tower's upper floors and the clocks facing the city center. The upper floors were set up as a lookout point; the interior is closed to visitors while restoration work is under way, according to Sibiu's official tourist information. Around it, the buildings in Piața Mică follow the line of the old second ring of fortifications.
