Curtea de Argeș Monastery

Curtea de Argeș, Argeș

At Curtea de Argeș, in Argeș County, the monastery church preserves the carved decoration of Neagoe Basarab’s foundation. The church was built by Neagoe Basarab and consecrated in 1517. The twisted towers, decorative bands and stone ornaments are what made the monument famous.

During the reign of King Carol I, the church was restored by the architect André Lecomte du Noüy and became a royal necropolis. Inside are tombs of the Romanian royal family. The episcopal palace and the other buildings in the precinct complete the complex, which preserves the traces of several restorations.
