Dacian Fortress in Căpâlna

Căpâlna, Alba

The ruins of the Dacian fortress stand above the village of Căpâlna, in Săsciori commune, Alba county. They occupy the hill known as Dealul Cetății, on the left side of the Sebeș valley. The fortification was part of the defense system of the Dacian center of Sarmizegetusa Regia and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sections of the walls and traces of the entrance tower survive on site. Archaeological research has revealed pottery, tools, weapons, coins and ornaments. The location on a hill with steep slopes explains the defensive role of the place and its position watching over the valley.
