Dormition of the Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Băile Herculane

Băile Herculane, Caraș-Severin

The Assumption of the Virgin Roman Catholic Church closes the northern end of Hercules Square in Băile Herculane. The current building was erected between 1836 and 1838, on the site of an older chapel. The round body, the dome and the portico with columns differentiate it from the elongated facades of the surrounding spa establishments.

The church maintains its connection with the religious life of the imperial resort: Empress Elisabeth attended services here during her stay in 1887. The church is still a place of worship, with its patronal feast celebrated on August 15. The exterior can be seen from the square, and visiting the interior must be adapted to the schedule of the church and services, respecting the silence of those at prayer.
