Dr. Alexandru Șafran Jewish Museum

Bacău, Bacău

The Dr. Alexandru Șafran Jewish Museum is located on Erou Gheorghe Rusu Street, in central Bacău. The collection is dedicated to the history of the local Jewish community and brings together documents, photographs, prayer books and religious objects. They preserve evidence of the religious life and the presence of the community in the city.

The museum building was built in 1893 and originally had the function of a matzo bakery. During the Second World War it housed the Jewish high school. The history of the building is thus directly linked to the community presented in the exhibition, from the production of ritual bread to education and the preservation of local memory.
