Dragoș Vodă Bison Reserve
Vânători-Neamț, Neamț
The “Dragoș Vodă” bison reserve is in Vânători-Neamț commune, Neamț County, close to Neamț Monastery. It was set up in 1968, and the first bison were brought from Poland in 1970. The pens and the surrounding forest are part of the landscape of the Vânători-Neamț Natural Park.
The European bison, a massive mammal with a pronounced hump, is the reserve’s main species. Viewing points let visitors watch the animals in their enclosures. The reserve’s work is part of programs to conserve and rebuild the population of this species, which once disappeared from the wild in Romania.
