Drobeta Roman Fort

Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți

Drobeta Roman Fort stands on the bank of the Danube, in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți County. It was built in the early second century to guard the bridge the Romans had built across the river. The fortification and the surrounding settlement became an important center of the province of Dacia.

On the ground you can see the foundations of the walls, the gates and the traces of the military buildings, laid out along the fort's streets. Remains of the Roman baths and Trajan's bridge are preserved nearby. Finds from the archaeological excavations are also displayed at the Iron Gates Region Museum, next to the site.
