Ecaterina Teodoroiu Mausoleum

The Ecaterina Teodoroiu Mausoleum is located in Piața Victoriei in Târgu Jiu and marks the resting place of the First World War heroine. The monument was created by the sculptor Milița Petrașcu and inaugurated on 8 September 1935. The initiative to erect it was supported by Arethia Tătărescu and the National League of Women of Gorj.

The construction has the shape of a stone sarcophagus, placed on a plinth. The bas-reliefs on the sides trace episodes from Ecaterina's life, from her rural childhood to her participation in the war. The carved figures and scenes can be observed up close, around the monument, so the visit takes place in the public space of the square.
