Elie Wiesel Memorial House
The Elie Wiesel Memorial House in Sighetu Marmației houses the Museum of Jewish Culture in Maramureș. The exhibition was inaugurated in 2002 in the house on Tudor Vladimirescu street no. 1, where the writer was born and spent his childhood. Elie Wiesel survived the Holocaust and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
The visit presents both his biography and the life of the local Jewish community. The objects of worship, religious books, photographs and documents outline the daily practices and the history of deportations from Maramureș. The museum maintains spaces for exhibitions and educational activities, including in the basement and in the inner courtyard. The house can be visited as a museum, with its own circuit dedicated to the memory of the community.
