Emerald Lake at Racoș
Racoș, Brașov
Emerald Lake is located in the former Brazi basalt quarry, near Racoșul de Jos, in Brașov county. Water filled the pit after quarrying struck a spring, and the lake is also fed by rain and snowmelt. Rock walls surround the green surface of the lake.
Its color is influenced by algae, fine rock particles in the water and sunlight. The shades change according to the season and the angle of the light. The basalt in the quarry was formed by the cooling of lava during ancient volcanic activity in the Perșani Mountains. The lake is included in the Racoșul de Jos Geological Complex.
