Enisala Fortress
Enisala, Sarichioi Commune, Tulcea County
The Enisala fortress stands on a hill near the village of Enisala (Sarichioi commune, Tulcea county), above the Razim and Babadag lakes. It was built in the second half of the fourteenth century, to control the roads and trade in this part of Dobrogea. Its origin is cautiously linked to the presence of the Genoese in the region.
The stone walls follow the irregular shape of the hill, and the preserved gate and towers give it an easily recognizable silhouette. From above, a wide panorama opens over the lakes. The citadel is open air, on sloping land, so it is worth visiting in good weather.
