Evangelical Church in Sebeș

Sebeș, Alba

The Evangelical Church in Sebeș preserves Romanesque and Gothic building phases within the same structure. The construction of the basilica began in the thirteenth century. The large Gothic choir, built on the east side, dates from the following century, while the old part of the church was preserved and adapted. The bell tower is at the western end of the central nave.

On the outside you can see the buttresses, the tall windows and the carved stone decoration. The choir holds the polyptych altarpiece made between 1518 and 1526, with panels and religious sculptures. Near the church stands the Chapel of Saint James, a smaller building from the early fifteenth century. The complex stands in the historic center of Sebeș and illustrates the development of the medieval Saxon community.
