Exaltation of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Church in Sighet

Sighetu Marmației, Maramureș

The Ukrainian Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Sighetu Marmației was built between 1791 and 1807 for the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic community. In its place there had been a wooden church, later moved to Săcel. The masonry building is distinguished by the tower above the entrance and by the rhythmic facade of pilasters and tall windows.

Today it is a Ukrainian Orthodox church and has a central role in the religious life of the community. Here, the tradition of celebrating holidays according to the old calendar is preserved, including Christmas in January, accompanied by Ukrainian carols. The church functions within the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate; the visit must take into account the services and the activity of the parish.
