Extinct volcano at Racoș

Racoș, Brașov

The extinct Racoș volcano is located on Hegheș Hill, near Racoșul de Jos in Brașov County. Quarrying of volcanic rock has cut a section through the ancient cone, exposing reddish slopes and layers of material deposited by eruptions. The site belongs to the Racoșul de Jos Geological Complex.

The volcano was formed approximately 1.2 million years ago, through explosive eruptions that threw lava fragments around the volcanic vent. Porous rocks, called scoria, still hold the holes left by gas bubbles. The red color comes from the oxidation of iron in the rock. The same geological complex includes Emerald Lake and the basalt columns.
